What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a disease that impacts millions of people worldwide. Symptoms of dry eye include: scratchy eyes, feeling like something is in your eye, excessive tearing, light sensitivity, redness, irritated eyes and can even cause eye pain. Dry eye can stem from several different causes. Your eye might not be producing enough tears or the quality of the tears being produced may not be ideal. During our dry eye exams we make sure to measure the amount of tears being produced and the quality and tailor treatment to address the specific concern.

Factors that increase your risk of dry eye include: environmental,  staring at a computer screen all day, systemic conditions such as thyroid dysfunction. If you are experiencing complications from dry eye, it is best to make an appointment with one of our eye doctors to learn about the causes and possible solutions for treatment.

What is Blepharitis?

One of the condition that can cause dry eye is known as blepharitis. This is when the eyelids become red, inflamed, and irritated. Usually, blepharitis will occur in one or both eyes as a result of a clogged oil gland and debris on the eyelashes and eyelids. We offer Blephex to our patients. This treatment helps clean and exfoliate the eyelids providing immediate relief. The team at Des Plaines Eye Care Center is well versed in treating blepharitis.

How Can an Eye Doctor Help?

When it comes to treating dry eye syndrome there are several treatments available. For some, simply using artificial tears is enough and patients find relief.  For others, a medical device called punctual plugs can help keep tears on the surface of the eye longer and provide lubrication. This treatment approach provides instant relief and we offer patients with 3 month or 6 month dissolvable punctual plugs.
